Look for a typewriter that has gold lettering on it, found on the Royal 1 model, or silver lettering found on the Royal 10 model. By the time he was eventually rescued, Selkirk had become adept at hunting and making use of the resources that he found on the island. Later, a second shift key was added to the right side, and eventually the shiftlock was upgraded from a tab to a proper key. Yet this is classic 1930s design, and a terrific typer for actual use. The one exception is the Royal Quiet De Luxe Gold model, which had shiny gold plating on the sides, with the rest of the body being black.

They are on twin metal spools as you see in the pictures. It is caps-only, with a san-serif italic font designed especially for this machine for maximum readability. I'm still trying to identify exactly what this machine was.
